Password issues

Asked by Kilgore Shaft

When I installed Ubuntu I did not put in a password. It seemed to allow this option. However, now that I want to do admin tasks like installing new software, it asks me for a password (that does not exist) Can anyone help please?

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/resetpassword

Please don't use a blank password when asked to make one. It is there for a reason

I have followed the instructions from the link you provided, as far as I can tell, exactly but I get the following result:
"passwd: Authentication token manipulation error
passwd unchanged

This after I am given the opportunity to enter a new password and re enter it. Very frustrating.

In the console run:

mount -o remount,rw /

Then run:

passwd yourname

As you did before

The original answer fixed my problem. Another problem I have is not reading the detail sufficiently. Thanks for your help.
