libimobiledevice 1.2.0 - how to install?

Asked by Jim Stokes

Through Ubuntu Software Centre, I'm able to install libimobiledevice 1.1.5, but I understand there is a 1.2.0 version available that has resolved the read/write problem with ipod/ipad/iphone.

It's available for download at libimobiledevice.org but I'm not familiar enough with linux to know how to install it.

Will 1.2.0 be available for download through Ubuntu Software Centre soon? Seems like the easiest solution.

Or can someone point to a relatively simple way for me to install same? Is there a simple way?

Thanks, Jim.

Ubuntu is taking over most packages from Debian stable (or eventually unstable). It takes some time from the moment that a new program version is published on the homepage, that package is taken over into Debian experimental and stable, and finally it makes its way into Ubuntu.

libimobiledevice 1.2 has just made its way into Debian experimental, see https://packages.debian.org/src:libimobiledevice so you have to expect that it will take some more months until it will show up in Ubuntu.

You might try speeding that up by creating a bug report that list the improvements and bug fixes in the new version.

For some packages people provide an updated version in a PPA
Maybe there is already somewhere such version, please check https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=libimobiledevice

And then there is the possibility that you build the 1.2 version on your own system by compiling the program yourself. I expect that the home page http://libimobiledevice.org/ will contain the information required to do so.

Thanks for this information. I now know that I can either wait or figure out how to install it myself.

Thanks, Jim.

Hello everybody.
I have the same problem and can't fin how to solve it. The Read Me-File in the libimoviledevice 1.2.0 folder i have downloaded from their homepage gives instructions, but they don't work. Whatshould i do to compile the package?
First of all, i saved the folder on the desktop. Is this maybe why it does not work?
Thanks.

@Fab Leroux:
What happens if you try following the instructions?

I recommend that you create a question document of your own, then it is possible to follow the status of the question document.

If you follow the instructions you learn that there is an unmet dependency call libusbmuxd 1.0.9 but my synaptic mgr can only find 1.0.8

@edward stavin: If you try downloading and compiling the libimobiledevice 1.2.0 version from http://www.libimobiledevice.org/ you have to be aware that there might be some dependencies that cannot be met by the Ubuntu packages but only by higher versions that you have to download from http://libimobiledevice.org/ or other external sources. You might try http://www.libimobiledevice.org/downloads/libusbmuxd-1.0.9.tar.bz2
