Problems from fresh install KDE4 8.04 x86 get go limiting facilty for intermediately skilled users

Asked by Merlin

Binary package hint: kubuntu-kde4-desktop

1: on two disk machine, fresh install did not load boot loader for other disk to which important data was transfered needed tomorrow. To the meta crytical,I did also burn 2 dvd's data back ups but had left tomorrows clients artwork on the desktop and forgot it only due to extreme fatigue, backing up the home directory only recursively.
Could someone please explain how I can edit the init scripts so the sda disk boot loader recognizes the sdb disk OS so can be accessed at boot time. This is the primary drama at present. my shell facility is very intermediate defined to mainly primary commands.

2: Konqueror has no active search engine for browsing, one must know all URLs by heart of pray, Cannot find homepage setting feature. Conquerors spelling checker is giving me hell, complaining but not giving me options that would shut it up and sorry I say tomato not tomayto. Cannot find who is on third, what, no i thought he was on second.
Konqueror's cursor is also like sledge when you need a jeweler's hammer, it is very hard to place in between the letters you wish using the mouse as its command event.
Konquerer does not recognize the OS define protocol of this page so the title will not load unless i say "i dont know" which is a lie, konqueror has succeeded where many have failed, the OS is Kubuntu KDE4 8.04 x86.
God Konquerors cursor line is a blunt chisel.

3:Update facilty seems to have stopped due to the three hour update inducing sleep and me not signing the SU protocol mandatory for its installation,I am in a crock of s!@#.

4: cannot find e mail account setting in K mail so have to surf to site to access email so consequently willnot have notification but see next article

Thats just for starters, I have no doubt I may discover some of these are reasonably easy to fix, but am pressed for time due to problem one and client due at 8.00am tomorrow and his job is on the inaccessable disk, so time restrictions demand I start drawing now and I might just make the deadline and have no time to search this board thoroughly. so please forgive me keeping this fact in mind
I'd lay London to brick the the One world, One government mob are having no such problems accessing my master drive.
Thanks for all the work you people kindly donate, the Greek gift was wonderful (tongue firmly in cheek, hidden processes on other system activating a poor sense of humour, and sense of timing come to think of it,they will throw stones not advice.
Over and out. closing conduit, bellsound.

I think this is better suited as a question, rather than a bug report.

OK... I'm having trouble understanding you, but I'll do my best:
1. Do you mean the drive is not being mounted? If you do, from a command line, "sudo mkdir /media/otherdisk", "sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/otherdisk" (replacing /dev/sdb1 with whatever your second disk is), can you access the drive in /media/otherdisk?

The best way to get it to mount at boot is to add the drive to /etc/fstab.

2. Konqueror does have built in search. I can't at present (in KDE 4) see the search box that it always used to have. Hopefully this will be back for KDE 4.1. In the meantime, try "gg:badger"

3. Kill it and try again? You will need to enter your password at the SU prompt.

4. Settings -> Configure Kmail -> Accounts. The system is not very intuitive, sadly, but if I remember rightly it should pop up a wizard the first time it is run to help you.

Sorry, the OS is largely foriegen to me (though impressive, and once sought out will great).
What I meant was as a major problem was during the install, there was no dialog regarding a second hard disk running as slave and to which i placed my data so it does not now come up as a boot option on the loader.

I have Kubuntu now on the list of boot options only and the other disk containing Ubuntu studio is not accessable so have no choice between operating system i wish to access.

I did think it a question myself, but borderline as the Gnome version gets it all perfect first hit and I have a list of optional OS's I can load to RAM, or did have rather.

I also cannot move widgets or when changing the main menu get it to go where I would like,it reminds me of a mule once had.

If I could just get advice on how to be able to add the second operating system to options to boot, the other quoted dilemmas would largely dissolve. My ignorance of its operation requirements does not mean it is not impressive, and i sincerely think this could be considered a bug at least in a manner, and thought i am more likely to get the right answer first time around as the bug coterie have a larger programming hep audience.

thanks for taking the time to reply.

P.S. I am sorry that due to some very large problems now regarding inaccessible projects and so busy have to place a broom up my date to sweep the floor as I run and won't have time to gamble on getting access to the disk for a couple of days.

I will monitor the emails , just in case a solution is simple and supersedes the necessity of now reproducing all art by hand for my pitches with clients.

Also the Conqueror built in search refuses to function saying option not available. but this is not major as there are ways to circumvent this.

"Beam me back down Scotty, I am as stupid as the rest of them"

Thanks again Tom

I dont think i will use Konqueror any way for surfing as I am not aware of how to limit? completely halt malevolent scripting with it.

I removed the OS system as my skill level is not up to dealing with what is largely still a beta application with to many difficulties for a person of average skill.

Hi Merlin, I'm also a newbie but try using Kde 3.5 next time . Everything seems good on 3.5. I used Kde 4 and adept package manager wouldn't work until I removed it and reinstalled it. Kde 4 seems kind of buggy . May just be me though ! tombo
