Unresolvable Dependencies while installing Kopete

Asked by Vishak

I uninstalled Kubuntu from Ubuntu 8.10 last evening using http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/puregnome.php

It removed KDE alright along with host of applications that I normally use! I was able to reinstall Amarok, VLC Player, Skype, Opera but not Kopete!

If I try installing Kopete from termianl, this is the error I get:

sudo apt-get install kopete
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kopete: Depends: kdebase-runtime (>= 4:4.2.0) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: kdelibs5 (>= 4:4.1.96) but 4:4.1.2-0ubuntu10 is to be installed
Depends: kdepimlibs5 (>= 4:4.2.2) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libmsn0.1 but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

I tried installing kdepimlibs5, this is what I get

sudo apt-get install libmsn0.1
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libmsn0.1 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package libmsn0.1 has no installation candidate
vishak@Ubuntu-vishak:~$ sudo apt-get install kdepimlibs5
Reading package lists... Done

I am not sure how to proceed from this point. Any help will be appreciated.

Do you have any apt lists in /etc/apt/sources.list.d which may be causing conflicts?
If not, I'd recommend commenting out everything that isn't an official Ubuntu repository in sources.list then run

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

libmsn0.1 sits in intrepid-backports, so you need to remove the leading '#' from the lines containing "intrepid-backports" in your sources.list. Then you should be able to fix your broken packages/dependencies with:
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo apt-get --fix-missing install
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Guys, appreciate your response. Unfortunately, I noticed several other problems and I took rather a crude approach to solve it. I just did a clean install of Ubuntu :)

I never had any opportunity to test those things....
Thanks guys anyways. I will try to close this thread.
