What ftp to use with Quanta+

Asked by Gary L. Kerr

I know very little about file transfers, its protocol, etc., but I've been asked to monitor and update a specific website for a non-profit organization called NHRRA.org. I use Ubuntu 10.04 (as updated when told to do so) and think that I will be using Quanta+ as the website editor. It has been suggested that I download the website to my local address (local computer) and to do the editing on the local computer to be sure all is correct, then upload when local editing is finished. However, I am not sure what "FTP" software package best emulates with Quanta+ and Ubuntu.
I would appreciate any positive comments that are available. Thanks, Gary L. Kerr

I don't know what you mean when you ask what FTP software "best emulates." But if you want a dedicated FTP client (i.e. a program that pretty much just acts as an FTP client, as opposed to being an all-round file manager or content browser), then FileZilla is pretty good (it's provided by the package "filezilla"). If you're running Kubuntu, then you might be interested to know that Dolphin and Konqueror will connect to ftp sites as well. (If you're using regular Ubuntu, you may be interested to know that Nautilus also has this capability.)

Thank you for your suggestions. I will try them, but do not know yet if the answer is completely addressed. By "best emulates" I mean that conflicts or "bugs" do not exist between Ubuntu 10.04, Quanta+, and the FTP package. Sometimes a package works better than others even though they are all supposed to provide the same services.
Thanks Eliah Kagan for your thoughts and suggestions. Gary L. Kerr

Filezilla tends to work well on Ubuntu, though like any application, bugs do exist. Quanta+ will actually do ftp for you, without requiring another application, and that is itself suitable for most users' needs, but from your question I had assumed it was not suitable for yours. If you need help getting Quanta+ set up to access the web site via ftp, please post a reply about that. Otherwise, if you want a dedicated ftp client, then since such an application will not integrate directly with Quanta+ (i.e. Quanta+ will not control it and it will not control Quanta+), there shouldn't be any problems involving the interoperability of FileZilla with Quanta+.

Eliah Kagan: I did not realize that Quanta+ has the file transfer capability. Therefore, I will try using only that one program rather than confusing myself anymore than I already am confused.
When I finally did get the "filezilla" operational just a few minutes ago, I ran into a problem caused (I think by my router) which was by-passed by a direct connection from the cable modem to the computer. However, after the supposed "successful" file transfer occurred, I could not find where the files were put on my computer. Maybe the Quanta+ will be easier for this dummy to operate. Will try that in a bit. Thanks for your suggestion. Gary

Eliah Kagan: I guess I am confused because I've just been through all the pull-down menus and did not find anyone that seems to be related to "import" of an existing site (nhrra.org for example) or something that relates to FTP of files and screens from a website. I also tried the "help" tab and the error message was that it could not find some .exe file.
As you may have determined, I am a real beginner at this; therefore, most "assumptions" regarding experience are not likely valid ones. What I would like to do is to copy the website and all embedded pages and links to my home computer so I can update the copy and then upload the finished pages to the server. But I'm stuck on how to do the first step - download the website info. Gary

Can you help with this problem?
