kdm 'login failed' with special character password

Hello,

kdm doesn't accept the login when I set a password with special characters. The initial password that was set up during install worked but after a change only text console login is possible. The PAM configuration files don't say very much to me. Any ideas where I can look specifically?

Release: Kubuntu 8.10 (i386)

in the cd you can choose mem test .
