9.10. What are the necessary plug-ins to play DVD movies on Totem?

Try:

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse libdvdread4

Then:

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

thanks for the suggestion WOJOX but no luck here. upon trying to play DVD, black either reverts to background or I think instantly fast forwards to end.

The only other option for totem if I remember is xine. Open Synaptic and search for it to see if it's installed.

Then to ensure that DVDs use gxine automatically when inserted, open Places → Home Folder and select Edit → Preferences and then click on the Media tab. Choose gxine from the DVD Video option.

If all else fails mplayer and vlc are great media players. Personally I use vlc.

sorry for my lazy unspecific message above but thanks for yours. I'm dual booted with Windows Vista and Media Center plays DVD movies just fine. Back to your original source suggestions, I installed all the gstreamers, etc., but when I have tried to install "css" file you and some manuals have suggested the reply has always been NO SUCH FILE EXISTS, or words to that effect. Mine is a relatively new, cheap laptop---could someone have pre-installed some kind of blocker? many thanks again

I think I've allready installed video option, ie VLC, Xine , etc, but if I can't access libdvdcss2, wil any of them work?

You should be looking for 4 not 2

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh

Try and move to that directory. Just open Places > Computer

Then usr > share > doc > libdvdread4 > and you should see the install-css.sh

I never did ask are you using Jaunty 9.04 or Karmic 9.10?

Success, I believe. While I wasn't able get any by typing the css message (w/read4) into the Terminal, I was able to install it y means of Medibuntu. Maybe someday I'll be able to understand how and why.

Meanwhile, I have at least 4 DV D players installed and am trying to sort through them. They all seem to play--you said you use VLC. One other question if you're just dying for me for me to ask (make it 2). When I 'upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10, I thought 9.04 was supposed to go away. It didn't and what is the easiest, safest way to make it go away? thanks, thanks, thanks
