Battery meter doesn't show in the bar on Ubuntu 12.04

Selecting an option to show battery status in the menu bar when battery present doesn't seem to work. Nothing is displayed in the menu bar. Hardware in question is Acer Aspire One 722 (12" netbook).

Any suggestions?

Login screen displays sound and power items. This is using Gnome Classic and issue is not present in Unity.

Had to re-install Ubuntu 12.04 fresh. This issues was present on two different laptops (IBM and Acer) that were upgraded from 11.10

My guess is that problems were result of the upgrade process and interaction with the Gnome Shell.
