HP laserjet 3030 fails after update

Asked by Juan Collao

After a CUPS upgrade my computer doesn't recognize my HP printer/scanner anymore. This is the second time this has happened in the last 12 months when a later upgrade fixed the problem. What's up with the CUPS upgrades? Apparently not enough testing gets done before an upgrade gets released. For now, I'm left without a printer or scanner. Any suggestions? I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.

Do you have hplip installed ?

I just tried to install hplip using the instructions in:

http://www.hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

I saved the file "hplip-3.10.9.run" in my desktop as indicated by the instructions and then ran the command:

sh hplip-3.10.9.run

Then I got the error:

sh: Can't open hplip-3.10.9.run

I guess I must be doing something wrong. Still, my printer/scanner worked fine without this program for a long time, why do I need it now? Any chance that cups will have a new update that will fix this problem? I'm sure I'm not the only one who lost access to the printer.

Go to System->Administration->Synaptic and enter "hplip" in search window.
Then install it.

I went to Synaptic and it turns out that I already have hplip installed. So even with hplip installed my computer doesn't recognize my printer (which by the way is an HP laserjet 3030). I would greatly appreciate other suggestions. I'm in desperate need of my scanner for copying business documents. Thank you.

Cups manage only printing and not scanner.
If both printer and scanner fail, it looks more like an issue on "hplip".
Can you provide result of command:
    lsusb
with the multifunction connected.

I ran "lsusb" from the terminal and this is what I got:

Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 046d:c016 Logitech, Inc. M-UV69a/HP M-UV96 Optical Wheel Mouse
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 045e:00db Microsoft Corp. Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 V1.0
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Clearly the printer is not listed, but the printer is turned on and the cables are firmly connected. Now one thing I noticed is that the version of hplip on the HP website (hplip-3.10.9) is not the same as the one I see in synaptic (3.10.2). Maybe that is the problem, but I don't see where I would upgrade to version 3.10.9.

Please unplug, switch off printer, then switch on, plug and wait 30 seconds.
Then run again "lsusb" command. It's useless to look at Hplip or Cups if printer is not detected on USB bus.

I followed the instructions exactly, but no luck. The printer is still not listed with lsusb. However, this is not a new printer. I have used it with Ubuntu for a long time. The only thing I can think that has changed is the cups update. The problem could be related to something else, but I don't know what else to try. Any other suggestions?

A million apologies. It turns out that I had a bad cable. Replaced the cable and it now works. Thank you for all the help.
