Any plan to improve time to hibernate and wake up

Asked by Julien

As the market has more smartphone and tablet stuff which could sleep/hibernate and wake up nearly instataneously, it seems a pity computer can't do the same.
As a traveller, it also makes a lot less comfortable to use the netbook outside of my accomodation

On my Samsung N230 netbook with Ubuntu 11.04, I have the following time to
boot/hibernate/wake w nothing: 50s/20s/60s
(from power button to where the user has full control / system waiting for user input / no big tasks pending in background)
and it's time without any applications loaded, just after boot, else it could be a lot worse.

Ubuntu is in the news for boot time
http://linux.slashdot.org/story/11/07/25/2118234/Ubuntu-1110-Down-To-12-Second-Boot
but AFAIC, I would prefer 10 sec hibernate and wake up and 50 sec boot than the other way.

Thanks.

I recommend searching http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com to see if this has been discussed. If so, you could contribute your thoughts to the conversation. If not, you could start a topic about this there. (If you do find or create a topic about this on Brainstorm, it would be helpful to provide a link to it here, in case someone searches for the issue and finds this page.)

sleep/hibernate on netbooks are problematic. these devices are configured differently. it takes 10 mins to wake from sleep on my netbook. however, on the laptop, it wakes instantaneously when i press the power button. some people have been able to tweak their netbooks to wake up right away. but that only works for some models.
