I forgot my password for windows xp don't have the original cd and can't get into my windows

Asked by wtherainbow

I installed some network thing in my Window XP professional and it asked me to restart my computer. When it re booted it asked me for a password which I can't remember for the life of me. I don't want to lose all my files. If I can't get into Windows again is there a way to find the files I have on my hard drive or saved through windows onto this Ubuntu program? I am new to Ubuntu and really haven't figured out how to use it yet.

You can change your XP password from within Ubuntu without knowing your old one. Add the Multiverse repository as described on the Community Help wiki, and then use Synaptic Package Manager to install a package with the name "chntpw" which you will be able to use from a Terminal window. (Don't worry, the command is self-explanatory enough for even a novice to use.)

I tried running it from a terminal window and nothing happened.

Type man followed by the program in Unix to get more information about a program (including how to use it). Furthermore you can google for chntpw to come up with http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/, the home page of the program where I am also sure you can also find more information. Read through that information and feel free to come back with specific requests here.

Disclaimer: I have never used above program. My advice is general. It seems the program should be what you are looking for, though.
