Which Ubuntu release (Breezy/5.10, Dapper/6.06.1, or Edgy/6.10) are you using? (You can check with ``lsb_release -r'' in a Terminal.)
Please check what the default audiosink is configured as (you can check with ``gstreamer-

Hi Thanks for the Reply it is Ubuntu 6.06. What you have said is way
over my head I will have to see if I can get my son to look at it as he
was the one that got me to use ubuntu. I am only a novice and I have
realised to use Ubuntu you have to be computer literate which I am not.
Thanks for the info it is appreciated.
Thanks
Lorraine

There are two courses of action, the first of which is described above. The second is to ensure that the following checkbox is ticked: System> Preferences> Sound> Enable software sound mixing .

Have been able to check your second course of action and the checkbox is
ticked for ESD.

I have surprised myself but followed your instructions, found the
terminal and put in the request it is set at ALSA - Advanced Linux sound
Architecht I pressed the test button and it came up "could not open
resource for writing.
Both courses of action I have completed without it fixing the problem.
Is there any other solution I can try.
Regards
Lorraine

A couple questions, then:
1) Has sound ever been audible in this Ubuntu install?
2) What make & model is the computer?

Once the install was completed I did have sound it was hit and miss. I
tried a mp3 file after I downloaded a few applications and it was
working and I even had the squirly screen playing to the music. When
next I tried to play a file it didn't work. It worked twice only.
My computer was upgraded a few months ago, and has run xp professional
with no problems with video, sound etc, up until the weekend it has also
got a dvd burner. It was my son that convinced me to take of xp and
give Ubuntu a go.
I kinda wish now I wouldn't have as I have had so many problems, I have
been able to resolve most of them but the sound is the one that has got
me. I am still trying there isn't a website I haven't read regarding
Ubuntu, but I have noticed that my problem is also quite common and has
come up on a few Abuntu sites.
Cheers
Lorry

You may want to check which sound card is defaulted. (System > Preferences > Sound, under Default Sound Card) If there is more than one, you may wish to try the others out.
