Sound not working on Gutsy Gibbon

Asked by Darina

Hi,

Can you please help me? I'm still a newbie. I have Asus A8N-VM motherboard with integrated sound card Nforce. It was working fine on Fiesty but after the upgrade to Gutsy Gibbon the sound disappeared. When trying to launch the sound mixer it displays "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found." The gstramer plugins look installed.

Thank you for replying so fast!

@ Leonidas: Thanks for the suggestion but I want to have this fixed if possible without reinstall of Ubuntu. I have Windows as well on my machine and it's too much effort to make it work and my net work on ubuntu as well (pppoe, some funny provider). Anyway...

Open a terminal and type:
asoundconf list
> asoundconf get the name cards

asoundconf set-default-card PARAMETER
> change the PARAMETER value with the one returned by "asoundconf list"

then add your user to audio group
sudo adduser <your_username> audio

Be sure that your user are enable to use audio by checking
System->Administration->User and Group-> Select "Your user name" -> Properties ...

Then reboot to be sure that all paramaters are reloaded.

Try your audio don't forget to double click on the upper right loudspeaker icon to check your devices volume and or by changing the device by select the File->Change Device

Test your audio System from System->Preferences->Audio

Hello,

Thank you for the prompt reply!

I tried what you suggested but the command 'asoundconf list' does not return any value:

darina@darina-desktop:~$ asoundconf list
darina@darina-desktop:~$

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

I have similar problem until I updated the module dependencies with:

 # depmod -a

After a reboot the sound was working.

Hi,

I tried this as well. When i typed it in the terminal nothing happened (nothing was displayed). After i restarted my computer nothing continued to happen :)

There are some errors displayed when i restart my computer. Something about network manager, signal 15 and shutting down quietly. I have to restart the hard way to escape from this screen. Do you think it is connected with my problem? Maybe i really should reinstall...

Thanks.
