option --root-directory supported?

grub-install 2.00-19ubuntu2 on Ubuntu 13.10

In the man page the --root-directory option is not listed, but specifying it with the grub-install command neither causes an exception nor a message to be printed that the option is ignored. Is it supported? If yes, why is is ignored silently?

Many commands in shell tool are kept without effect in order not to break backwards compatibility.
And for the other question: If the tool itself tells you that the parameter is ignored, the changed of it to be NOT ignored are rather few.
