grub rescue ubuntu erased after windows recovery system

Hi everybody!

I have a laptop with a partitioned hard disk. I have to OS, windows Vista and Ubuntu 10.04.
everything was working well till I decided to do the recovery of Windows Vista. now when I turn on my laptop, instead of the boot it appears the message "grub rescue>".
I looked for some information on the ubuntu forums and found a solution that unfortunately doesn't work in my case.

I booted from cd and I run the Ubuntu OS. then I opened the terminal and tried to reinstall the Grub.

I cannot understand which is my ubuntu partition with the command "sudo fdisk -l". I've pasted the results below:

I should mount the partition in which ubuntu is installed, but I can't find the right partition. I suppose that /dev/sda2 is the Vista partition and that /dev/sda3 is the Ubuntu partition.
anyway I cannot mount neither the partition /dev/sda3 with the command "sudo /dev/sda3 /mnt", nor the partition /dev/sda2. these are the results on the terminal

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo /dev/sda2 /mnt
sudo: /dev/sda2: command not found
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo /dev/sda3 /mnt
sudo: /dev/sda3: command not found

Is the Lucid install a desktop install with mouse pointer and Firefox web browser?

I'm sorry but I didn't understand what you mean. I'm quite a beginner with computers.

anyway now I'm using a live version of Ubuntu 8, an old cd that I have and still works well.

the CD with which I'm working now is of a desktop ubuntu 8 version with mouse pointer and Firefox. I'm using it now.

I recommend you boot to the Precise CD (Ubuntu 12.04) and you can upgrade the installed Ubuntu to one which is actually supported.

alright. if I install Ubuntu 12.04, that will solve the problem with the grub rescue in the boot? I will be able to use also Vista?
