Failed Grub re-install

Hello,
Had a working Win7/Ubuntu until installed a 2nd copy of Win7.
Tried the https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair
and log is at: http://paste2.org/p/2604485
This did provide a Grub page with access to both Win7's but the Ubuntu it gave access to is mostly unusable.
I do not want to screw up too much else but was reading that maybe the original live CD would help.
Any thoughts?

Hi ,

when you said "Ubuntu is mostly unusable" what exactly you mean ? What is the error ? Can you boot from the [Recovery Mode] option ?
I assume here , that you have a regular dual boot and not a wubi installation .

Hi Nick,
The Ubuntu desktop picture is there but there is no strip of selections down the left side and no access to pull down menus or any commands. I have to force a shutdown at the power button because there is no 'shutdown' option.

I did not try recovery mode yet. I will try that.

Yes, it is regular dual boot, not Wubi.

Yes, I can boot to the Recovery Mode. I tried the Grub reinstall from there just now, but when finishing booting, I still get the Ubuntu screen with no selections available.

Then this is not a problem with grub.

Grub's "job" finishing when the Ubuntu Logo appears and the OS loads (this with dots) .

Maybe you have a problem with graphics ?

Try the "nomodeset" option and see if the Desktop is usable .

When you are in grub .. highlight the Ubuntu entry (regular NOT recovery) and press [e] , then navigate with arrow keys and place the blinking cursor just after "splash" and leave a space and write : nomodeset

Then hit F10 to boot straight to Ubuntu with this option(nomodeset) enabled and tell me if works better.
