ubuntu 10.10. I replace Cd/dvd drive and then i get a screen with initramfs.

Asked by Ray McGee

I recently revived an old computer with ubuntu 10.10. I then had to replace Cd/dvd drive and then for some reason it takes me to a screen with initramfs. I tried do some research but I am pretty confused. I know it has something to do with the kernel and file system. I would like to get back to the desktop, I am far from being a power user. I thought about booting from the cd but according from bios I have no cd drive. I have done memory check and it passed.
If it makes a difference the computer is dell dimension 2400.
I am getting desperate enough to replace the hard drive and start clean. Help

Some old motherboard and CD drives don't work together.
If CD is not seen from BIOS, Ubuntu can do nothing. You will have to find another CD drive or change the motherboard (+CPU+RAM I presume).
Can you boot from a USB key ?
Does motherboard support PXE (network) boot ?

After talking to some people about the hardware. We came to the conclusion it is the hard drive and I will replace it. The network
boot would not work because of the hard drive. The cd/dvd drive was same as the manufacturers specifications.

Thanks
