Grub on Ubuntu/Windows

Asked by sridhar

I have installed windows 7 and then Ubuntu on my 64 bit machine. its working perfectly now. I see the grub to select the OS.

Now I am thinking to un-install windows7 and install another windows flavor. So my question is , before uninstalling this,do I need to take any precautions interms of GRUB and other boot upimages?

Thank you,
Sridhar

When you install Windows your boot loader will be overwrite so after using live cd you need to reinstall grub...

If you have lets say the grub menu display Ubuntu 10.04 then under that Windows 7 you of course as you already know choose what you need to go to.
But if you say get rid of Windows 7 and put on Windows XP then when you reboot you will still see the same grub menu as before in other words what ever you put on now will not add itself to the grub menu. You will still see the same grub menu as before no matter what Windows OS you use.

BUT, if you say Install Linux Mint then THAT grub menu will install itself.

There is a way to alter the grub menu so it no longer sees Windows 7 but the actual OS you newly Installed.

I hope this helps in some way.

Mike.
