grub package

meaning of grub notation

when I go into grub terminal, at the stage where I can choose which OS to use, I see the notation;
/grub ls
(memtest) or (hda1-msdos)

can I get into those locations like hda1 etc and see what files are there?

could someone kindly advise me if it is possible and how to do it

I cane find any documentation on it

I suggest you boot to live CD and chroot to the installed OS. You can then reinstate Grub to the MBR.
