what is the way best way to get my windows partition back on my comp after installing ubuntu?

How do you mean? Have you installed a dual boot and want access to the NTFS partition? What is the situation please, the question is very vague

sorry for being so vague,this is very new to me .So in advance "please have some patiences with .
I have a gateway laptop -2 of them . i install Ubuntu using the hole HD -not knowing any better.now i want to put window back on the lap top of 1 of them. I used a live CD to do the install 11.04 and went the route suggested .I think it was : sd1 with ext4 -with swap ubuntu ........................is this any help to analyze my problem....

If I understand, you have two laptops and want to install Windows on one of them.
I think it's more a Windows question.
First do a backup of valuable data you have on laptop.

Then you will need a Windows installation CD.
I'm not expert on Windows, but I presume that of you put the Windows installation CD on laptop and boot on it, it will propose you to use whole disk erasing fully Ubuntu.
If Windows has issues with partition scheme, you can boot on Ubuntu CD, choose "Try" instead of "Install" and then System->Administration->Gparted (or Disk Utilities, which is another software). Then erase all partitions on disk and retry with Windows installation CD.

If you don"t have a Windows installation CD, but both laptops are the same, it could be possible to clone the disk.

Thanks ,I will try that.Yes my problem was installing the xp back one my laptop because of Ubuntu being installed using the the full hard drive . I will let you know how i make out

The Windows install CD can delete the partitions you installed Ubuntu to and make a new partition to install Windows to. As Delance says, backup your data before starting.
Not strictly and Ubuntu question as your issue is with installing Windows.
