manual partitioning

When installing Ubuntu 10.04 / WinXP from CD I have to specify partitions manually. Windows has all
60003 MB on C:\ (dev/sda1 ntfs). When in Edit Partition / Change I'm not getting the line
"New Partition Size". Just 'Use As', 'Format' and 'Mount'.

Do I need an external partition program? I have to shrink C:\ but keep Windows intact.

Did you hibernate the system or did you shutdown fully. You should be able to resize the NTFS to make room for Ubuntu. You should select to try the OS rather than install and you can resize the NTFS in gparted.

Will I lose the Windows when I resize in gparted? Assigning space for Ubuntu is primary task isn't?

No, you will only resize. Be sure your backups are recent in case of catastrophe
