Help ! I am running out of disk space - Ubuntu 10.04
Please bear with me. I am new to Ubuntu. I just installed the program and it works fine ! Superb actually, but I am getting a message that I cannot download updates because I am running out of disk space ! I checked the SYSTEM MONITOR and it states all of my files are in /dev/sda/5 (3.2 GB) but I have (52 GB) in an empty file called /dev/sda/
How can I expand the first file or get access to the unused 52 GB ?
I would be grateful for any assistance--- thank you

Open a Terminal window (Applications > Accessories > Terminal or Ctrl+Alt+T) and run the following command (by pasting it into the Terminal and pressing enter):
df -h; mount; cat /etc/fstab; sudo fdisk -l
You may be asked for your password. As you enter it, you won't see any placeholder characters (like *). That's OK -- just type it in and press enter.
By the way, the reason I indicated to copy and paste that command is to reduce the likelihood of entering it incorrectly, but if you do insist on typing it in manually, please be aware that the last character of the command (after the dash) is a lower-case L, *not* an upper-case i.

Sorry, I neglected to mention that after you run that command, you must select all the text in the Terminal (Edit > Select All), copy it to the clipboard (Edit > Copy), and paste it here. That command will not solve your problem; it will only provide information that should help in doing so, which I can interpret.

Are you still experiencing this problem? If so, please run the command I indicated, and paste the text from the Terminal here. If you're having trouble doing that, please post, explaining the difficulty.

Hello Eliah,
In the meantime I bought a netbook with Linux -- a Mini 9 with Unbunto 10.10 already installed. I cannot wait to get it ! I truly dislike Windows .
Thank you again for your assistance.
Best regards, George

If you don't want further help on this issue through https:/
On the other hand, if you do want further help here, you'll have to try to follow my instructions and to answer my questions, as best you can. If you have trouble with anything, please post in detail about it.
For example, is the reason you're having difficulty following my instructions that you don't know how to copy and paste text? I don't typically explain in detail how to do that when first providing instructions, since most users know how to do that (either from using Ubuntu or, often, from using other operating systems such as Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X). However, if you do not know how to select text in your web browser, copy it to the clipboard, paste it into the Terminal, and then select text produced in the terminal, copy it to the clipboard, and paste it in your web browser or email client to post it here, then I can explain that in detail.
But perhaps that's not the problem you're having at all. I don't want to rush into giving you a detailed explanation for how to do something that most users know how to do, unless I know that's what you need help with.
By the way, do you recall how you installed Ubuntu? Did you install it with the Wubi installer inside Windows, or did you boot from a CD or DVD (or USB flash drive) and install it alongside an existing Windows system (or replace Windows with it, or install it on a system that never had Windows installed in the first place)? It's understandable if you can't answer that question, but if you can give any information about the initial steps you took to install Ubuntu, then we can figure that out.

Eliah,
Thank you for trying to help me, but my son attempted to fix the laptop so I could use it by locking me out of the hard drive. I can only run Ubuntu by the DVD drive.
I shall have some else more competent read you instructions and then allow him to fix the problem.
Please consider this case now closed.
Thank you again, George

There are several different things that being "locked out" of your hard drive might mean. I'm not sure which one you're referring to...but *all* of them are situations you can fix, and which you can help in fixing here on Launchpad. Furthermore, it should not be too hard to figure out exactly what is going on (so that you have the perception that you are "locked out" of your hard drive).
Do you want to fix that?
