Windows is dead, I wish to increase the ammount of memory alloted to Ubuntu.

Asked by Eli McEntire

Well, my Windows went kaput the other day and I have no clue what's wrong with it. It won't initialize it's cleanup program (though it seems to load the info it needs fine) and it won't boot up normally but for whatever reason whatever it effecting it does nothing to Ubuntu. I already figured out how to reach my C:\ drive from Ubuntu (which is really freaking epic) and I would like to start transferring over what data I feel I need, deleting what I don't, and generally switching over to Ubuntu fully. At a certain point in the future though I'm going to need to minimize Windows storage capacity and increase what is alloted to Ubuntu, but the only way I really know how to do that is through an install - which I only know how to do via Windows... which is dead.

So, pretty much any way to transfer over more of the Hard Drive space to Ubuntu will do for me. Even if it's a way to install without going into Windows.

Use the "gparted" program to delete your windows partition. You can then either create an ext4 partition in the blank space, or you can try resizing your existing partitions.

Note that when you delete the partition, any data on that partition will be effectively gone. Make sure you have backed up items elsewhere.

You say you only know how to do an install through Windows. Does that mean your Ubuntu system was installed with Wubi (http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer)? It is possible for a Windows system to stop working, except for the Windows boot menu, through which a Wubi system can be accessed.

If you installed your Ubuntu system with Wubi, then the Ubuntu partition is actually a file inside your Windows system. In that case, if you managed to successfully delete your Windows partition, you would also be deleting your Ubuntu system.

I don't think I installed with Wubi, I've never heard of that program so I figure it's unlikely I used it. Thank you for the warning though.
