terminal does not start

Asked by neuhardt

I tried some commands with the gnome-terminal. Now I cannot open the terminal window. If I start the terminal it comes for one second and disappears. I deinstalled it completely and reinstalled it without any effect.

Interesting. Okay- we can at least see if there is any kind of error message output when you run it.

First we need to ensure xterm is installed - it should be. Doing "dpkg -S" on my system tells me it is installed by the package xterm, which "apt-cache showpkg" tells me is required by xorg, so you should have it. Checking where it is with "which xterm" tells me it is in "/usr/bin/xterm".

We can add a shortcut to start the less sophisticated xterm (I may be walking on Ice saying that) by going to the gnome panel (at the top fo the screen), right-clicking to summon the context menu, and then click "add to panel".

Click "custom application launcher", then add the name "xterm" and the command "/usr/bin/xterm". Feel free to choose an appropriate icon.
Click ok to dismiss the Custom launcher dialog, and close to dismiss the "add to panel" window.

If you click this icon, you should now have an xterm running. You can now run gnome-terminal manually from here and determine the problem. At this point, you might want to capture any output you get.
