Browser does not start when clicking on a URL in terminal window

Asked by Ansus

Browser does not start when clicking on a URL link in terminal window.

In terminal windows URLs are underlined and have special "finger" cursor when pointing over them, however when clicking, nothing happens.

Hello,

To access a link:

To access a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that is displayed in a terminal, perform the following steps:

       1. Move the mouse over the URL until the URL is underlined.

       2. Right-click on the URL to open a popup menu.

       3. Choose Open Link to start a link application and display the file located at the URL.

I can confirm that in Ubuntu 8.04 LTS this function works. Can you try the following steps to see if this helps?

Regards,

kreggz

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

I think it looks like a bug. Terminal displays URLs in a specific way, and it looks like you can click on them. The expected behavior is: For URL, open them in the default web browser, for mailto links, open a new email in the default email program. And it is not what happens. So what?

* The expected behavior should not be expected (highly debatable)
* gnome-terminal does not implement this default behavior on purpose (why?) Bug -> Won't fix.
* gnome-terminal should implement this behavior. Bug.

In any case, the original message was not a question IMO.

I can understand what you are saying, it was only recently that I worked this out myself. It is kind of confusing.

Also, I believe this is by design or "working as intended" because I copied an pasted that from the Gnome terminal manual.

Do you think we can turn this question back into a bug? It can be tagged "Wishlist" or something like that, but it should be great to have other opinions, in particular from developers. Another possibility would be to create a "Brainstorm" idea.
