How do I type the accented characters for Spanish?

Asked by C Dudding

How do I type the accented characters for Spanish? I can cut and paste these special characters, so I know that they exist. This seems so simple. I can't find any help in the documentation. Thanks.

I have to hit two keys sequentially , one after the other, to produce any special characters.

key1 then key2 produces character

´ then ´ produces ´
¨ then ¨ produces ¨
´ then e produces é
~ then n produces ñ
¨ then o produces ö

Your mileage may vary, this may be based upon the default keyboard/language settings of your machine.

Hope this helps

The easiest way to do this is to go to System, Preferences, Keyboard (not shortcuts), choose the Layout tab, click on Layout Options, go to Compose key position and specify a Control Key.

Once you have done that, to get ñ, press 1. the control key, 2. ~ and then 3. n, resulting in ñ.

Similarly, you can easily create these: á, à, ö, ô, .....

Note: Many people set the Windows keys as their control keys ... the left Windows key is used as a trigger for "some of the functions" of compiz-fusion.

This worked, but I had to modify the above procedure slightly to get ñ. The order that I used was the control key pressed simultaneously with the letter. After releasing these keys, press the accent mark. This leaves me lacking only the "double-dot over a character". This is probably unsolvable since my keyboard does not have the double-dot character. Thanks so much for answering this question. Thanks also to Wyatt Smith who answered the question, however his solution did not work on my computer.
