Asked by Brian Boyden

Trying to install BitDefender. Have followed Ubuntu instruction manual but the links do not work. Have gone direct to tombuntu.com and downloaded BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6.4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run Having brought up the gnome-terminal and input the sudu command I do not get an end user licence agreement but get the message, sh: Can't open BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6.4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run
Can anyone help?

probably you'll need to run:

sudo chmod +x fileyouwanttoexecute
sudo ./fileyouwanttoexecute

however, in case I miss what is the problem, you should give us more details:

* what howto are you following (a link would be nice)
* what file have you downloaded and where did you get it (just to check that you are trying to run the right file).

cant open means that you probably have the file in the wrong folder. By default gnome-terminal will start in your home folder. so either put the file there, or use the "cd" command to go to the same folder as your file.

Secondly, one wonders why you are installing bitdefender. Doing what you are about to do is the insecure action. Downloading untrusted software, then giving it administrator priviliges is more likely to land you in hot water than anything else. I would first say (1) you don't need an antivirus scanner - these are largely a waste of time under any package managed system. (2) If you really are sure you need an antivirus scanner (you don't), don't use one from random places on the internet; use the ones in your package manager, eg clamAV

Virus scanners use signatures and heuristics, which is a fancy word for "guessing", and bit-for-bit matching. Signatures are well known to be ineffective, (hence heuristics), and heuristics often cause false positives.

After checking that url I see that it is a problem for downloading that
file.

So you haven't donwloaded it

For example, if I try to execute an existent file I get the same error:

hmontoliu@ulises:~$ sh file_that_doesnt_exists
sh: Can't open file_that_doesnt_exists

Hence you'll need to download that installer before attempting to
install it.

I suggest yo to do (in case your system is a i586): The following
commands are three lines, the cd one, the wget one an the sudo one (just
in case the lines get wrong in the email)

cd /tmp
wget
http://download.bitdefender.com/SMB/Workstation_Security_and_Management/BitDefender_Antivirus_Scanner_for_Unices/Unix/Current/EN_FR_BR_RO/Linux/BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run
sudo sh BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run

However, Are you sure you need bitdefender?

As you can see, the file is named

BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run.1

so use that name to install it.

I'm a server administrator and I've have deployed dozens of linux
servers for many companies. None of them have any antivirus installed.
None of them have ever had any virus/malware issues.

The main purpose for an antivirus in a linux machine is to protect
windows users. For example. If your linux machine hosts a mail server
that servers a windows desktops LAN it makes sense to check the emails
for malware because that mail will be opened in an insecure system like
windows. This may be also applicable for a samba file server.

If you are running an ubuntu desktop it is completely useless.
