when i start my system it hang up half the time and i have tounplug it to start over

I have the same problem on an HP computer, but it is running 8.04 i386 Ubuntu with all the updates. But it happens more than half the time. Today, I had to turn off the computer and start it up again 6 times before I finally saw the login screen. On mine, it boots great till it wants to switch screens. I think there is an issue with X-windows and my graphics card, and ATI 8600DV All-In-Wonder and that somehow the handshaking does not occur those 6 times and then the 7th time it is fine. Once I can see the login screen, the rest is great. But what a drag. It has been doing this since I switched to Ubuntu last year. I posted my question twice and never got an answer. I hope you do and hopefully it will help me.

I have the same problem too. I just recently switch to UBUNTU 9.10 and experiencing this horrible distraction. It always happens when I'm working on middle of something. Is there anything could be done to kill all running applications beside turning off the computer and starting over again. It would have been "ctrl + "alt" + "delete" in windows environment. I would love to see someone come up with some ideas of solving this problem.

Hi Bara75. In my case the screen is just blank, but it does not happen in the middle of anything. Its only when I start up my computer. "ctrl + "alt" + "delete" does work for me, but because the screen is blank, I can't see that anything happened after pressing the keys. If you press "ctrl + "alt" + "delete" on any Ubuntu OS that you can see on the screen, you will get options to do something, like Shut Down. With Shut Down the S is underlined, so the Alt-S key does the same thing. So when I I boot up and the screen mode does not change and I get a blank screen, I do a "ctrl + "alt" + "delete" wait a few seconds, and then I do a Alt-S. The computer then shuts down. Then I can try the whole boot-up process and "hope" that I will see a graphics screen. I still have this problem in 8.10, 9.04, and 9.10, so I have to assume there is a problem between Ubuntu and my ATI 8600DV All-In-Wonder graphics card. I have never had this issue with any other Linux OS and I have tried many. Would there be a command that could be added to any of the startup files that could activate the screen?

use failsafe gnome mode while starting & update , it worked for me, may be work for you also!
