how to check whether no sound is a software or hardware problem

Cannot tell if lack of sound is a hardware or software problem. Is there an utility to check the sound card in the system?

You have given zero details, no release, no make, no model.....nothing. In future can you give some details like this at the very least. How do you expect to get an intelligent answer when you tell us nothing?

Can you please give the output of:

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && chmod +x ./alsa-info.sh && ./alsa-info.sh --upload

Hi ,
you should check with other Operating Systems as well.

In Linux , most of the operating systems have live sessions , so download a live .iso (burn to CD-USB) and boot from there to see if audio works or not.

If none of O.S identify audio the probably is a hardware problem.

Also alsa-info.sh will give plenty of informations.
