No dial tone while connecting using Ubuntu 7.10

Hi!
How are you trying to dial, through wvdial or pon ? Paste the result of cat /etc/wvdial.conf

Actually I’m using gnome-ppp (it has all the data required in it as number, username and password)which I assume it uses wvdial at the same time. Anyway here’s the pasted text of cat /etc/wvdial.conf:

You definitely have not configured your modem using wvdialconf. You also
need to make sure you have drivers
for the modem installed. If you used to run it, the modem, under Windows
it certainly will not run on Linux.You will need to get Linux drivers.
Running sudo wvdialconf will tell you whether your modem is properly
configured by checking at the file which will be generated by that
command ie /etc/wvdial.conf.

If you look at the contents of that file - cat /etc/wvdial.conf - you
should see the following at a minimum:

[Dialer Defaults]
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = Analogue Modem
; Phone = <Target Phone Number>
ISDN = 0
; Username = <Your Login Name>
Init1 = ATZ
; Password = <Your Password>
Modem = /dev/ttySHSF0
Baud = 460800

Edit that to include your ISP's phone number,password -if any- and
username to look similar to this(these are actually the settings of
mine):

Dialer Defaults]
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = USB Modem
Phone = *99***1#
ISDN = 0
Username = saf
Init1 = ATZ
Password = data
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
Baud = 460800
I am using a cellphone to connect,so your settings will look slightly
different.

If running the command wvdialconf did not see your modem then you have
to install the drivers.That means that you have to identify precisely
which modem you are using,to do that you will need a tool called scanModem
which you can get from
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz. Unzip that file
and run the command scanModem. It will generate a folder called Modem
with all the information regarding your modem and the drivers you will
need. Inside that folder there is a file called ModemData.txt which you
might want to send to them to aid you in the selection and installation
of drivers for your modem.

hello there, first of all I'd like to thank you for your help.

I have configured wvdial.conf by typing "sudo wvdialconf" and editing it manually with all the required information. The driver was already successfully configured and is recognized by Ubuntu, but still, the modem isn't giving any dialtone in which I can't understand why. I hope you can still help me...I have pasted these for you to see yourself:

You dial by typing wvdial. What are the results of running that?
I read somewhere that a lack of dialtone acquisistion could be because
of low voltage on your line.Add X3 to your second Init string to make it
dial without waiting.Now it should look like:

Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 X3 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0

Trying reading the results of man wvdial and the wvdial.txt of your
Modem drivers folder.The answer may be in there somewhere.Let me know of
your progress.

Hello again. I doubt very much that it's from the low voltage on my line cause it's working fine in windows. I think it has to do with something about the information for the serial port cause thats what I'm only recognizing in the result of wvdial. I also read in the file wvdialconf.log with the result below. I think it's from the serial port and it seems that there is a program called setserial, I installed it but don't know how to use it. Would you have any idea about how to use it? Thanks a lot for your cooperation, really appreciated once again... :)

so I will send you in a direction which hopefully will iron this out.

Do this, send an email to <email address hidden> (attention to a Mr.
