how do i stop ubuntu from turning off usb devices to save batery power?

i am currently running linux of a 4gb flash drive and am having aproblem when i am on batery power.
when i close the lid of my laptop i have the screen set to go blank as this is all i want the computer to do.
however, linux also seems to be cutting the power to the usb flash drive that IT IS RUNNING OFF OF!!!!
this causes many types of errors that i have to reboot to fix.
this does not happen when running of of AC power just on battery!
can any ont tell me how to stop linux form doing this?

Hi Rob,

Try this:

Go to System --> Preferences --> Power management.
Go to the " On Battery Power" tab.

When laptop is closed "blank screen"
Uncheck "Spin down harddisk when possible"
