the top of the computer were all the applications and internet and everything is gone and i dont know how to bring back

my neice was playing around with the computer when i wasnt looking and now she clicked some buttons, the top of the screen were all the application were(interent and writing ) its all gone and missing i want it back but dont know how to bring it please help!

This happens to me on occassion with Ubuntu 10.04. Allways, a forced restart fixed it.

how do you do a forced restart?
