gnome panel disappears

Asked by Jim Charters

I have been facing a minor annoyance with the gnome panel for a while that seems different from other gnome panel issues. At random times the top and bottom panel's disappear. i have tried opening a terminal and killing the gnome-panel process to see if they would restart. The process restarts but the panel's don't reappear. If I restart my machine the panels are restored, but this is annoying - fortunately Linux reboots happen fast ;-).

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Latitude 620. I have had this issue since I installed Ubuntu. Other than this the OS rocks!

Did you check the properties to see if they are enabled on hiding? Reset your panels by running this in the Terminal: gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
killall gnome-panel

Hiding isn't enabled. The panels can stay visible for hours, then
disappear. I haven't been able to isolate a particular application that
causes it, and it happens both after the screen saver has kicked in as well
as when I am using the machine.

Will the gconftool-2 command effectively "cycle" the panel process? I will
try this next time the problem occurs.

Actually it doesn't need to be rebooted at all.
After changes have been made which may require restart, logout is sufficient.
Maybe a freeze requires reboot, but before a user may try to fix things via tty (virtual console, text only).

Random disappearance can be caused for example by compiz, i.e. disable visual effects.
