Ubuntu 10.4 does not show the Shut Down menu at all times

Asked by Aaron Remley

There are times when there is no selection for the Shut Down & Restart menu shown in the upper right menu bar next to my name.

Only way to shut down is power off, but then upon powering on and launching Ubuntu 10.4 it goes into a chkdsk C:/F to check the hard drive, which is annoying, but then boots up just fine and then shows the "O" Shut Down menu again.

Please doesn't close your pc from power off please open a terminal from Applications →Accessories→Terminal and type:

sudo shutdown -h now

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then be careful, you have not a real Ubuntu ext3/ext4 partition but you have installed Ubuntu using Wubi so if your Windows have partition problem you will loose Win and Ubuntu....

I strongly don't suggest Ubuntu installed in Windows (Wubi installation)

Marco;

Thank you for the suggested method of shutting down when the Shutdown menu is not available.

I had to install Ubuntu 10.4 as I had Windows XP Media Center and Microsoft Updates installed (14 of them) then I restarted and Windows would no longer boot up (tried all methods and it was dead, so I installed Ubuntu and it created its partitions next to Windows and for the last 4-5 months has been fairly stable. I continue to update regularly and it is quite a bit more stable now than when first installed. I had alot of information that was unrecoverable until after Ubuntu was installed, so I thank the Ubuntu project for my being able to see everything again.

This ticket has been solved for all intents and purposes.

Best Regards,

Aaron

I can only use Ubuntu 10.4 as Windows has been unusable for about 5 or 6 months, so for now there is nothing else to do.

Thank you for the help, Marco
