Launch panel locked on Ubuntu 10.04

Asked by Bill Donnelly

Launch panel has locked up after i tried to get it to auto-hide. I no longer have access to anything but internet access, just a white bar accros the top part of my laptop screen. Rebooted into safe mode and still was met with no launch panel access to Applications/Files/System etc. Can get to terminal but do not know what to do next.

This is the second time that I have had launch bar problems. Last time I had to reinstall Ubuntu. Would like to know how to use Terminal to uninstall launch bar and reinstall it if it happens again and I know it will as there are some bugs with the launch bar. Your help will be appreciated.

Bill

I think you dont have to reinstall Ubuntu to solve this Issue. When there is no Launch Panel, can you open this manually by hit Alt+F2 and run gnome-panel?

As I understand your comment, I just type in "gnome-panel" and it will be restored? Unfortunately my screen is locked up and I have no access to anything but shutdown/restart. I can run in safe mode but I am unable to do anything like using ALT+F2.

I had to reinstall as I have no idea how to use Terminal to bring about a solution. Thanks for your help.

Isn't that a little overreacting? Did you ever search the web with something like 'restore ubuntu gnome panel' or just simple the answers on LP?

e.g.
FAQ #1163

If Alt+F2 doesn't work (although when the panel is still running it should work), you can also switch to virtual console (text mode only) with:
Ctrl+Alt+F2
Login with your username and password.

This will unset your panel configuration to default:

gconftool-2 --shutdown
gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/panel
pkill gnome-panel

Return to desktop:
Ctrl+Alt+F7

- - - - - - -

CTRL+ALT+F1 (session)
CTRL+ALT+F2 to F6 (free tty)
CTRL+ALT+F7 (GUI)

Thank you for this info. This is the solution I have been looking for; a way out of my predicament with tools that work. Sorry for my impatience. Linux is new to me and with limited computer experience, somewhat difficult. In Windows I am ok, but Ubuntu has thrown me some curves.

I recently installed Ubuntu for it's music media capability as I listen to recorded cd's and on-line music. In spite of my trepidations with this software, Ubuntu & Rhythmbox has revolutionized my music world and has in a very short time become my preferred music application to Windows 7 & J. River Media.

Thank you for helping me in spite of my overreacting? "Did you ever search the web with something like 'restore ubuntu gnome panel' or just simple the answers on LP?" Yes I did but the solutions did not work for me.
