difference between auto ethernet and wired connection

when connecting via wired network what is the difference between auto ethernet and the connection i use which is wired connection 1? i have ubuntu 12.10. also, when i try to set up a connection using either one using 802.1x security i am unable to connect. why?

They are just names for different networks you connect to. If the network uses a different subnet then you will get another connection in the app. Most home networks use DHCP so you don't really care. You could give each network a name if you wanted.
