The Dell Latitute D505 has a Intel Pro Wireless 2200 card. It should run out of the box, the driver is included in the kernel.
So, do not try to install anything!
What you should do in any case is to update your system. The support period of Ubuntu 11.04 ended a month ago.
I recommend to update to 12.04. This is a special long term support release, which is supported for 5 years.
If you don't want to reinstall, you have to do 2 update steps: to 11.10 and then to 12.04.
Please read this pages for instructions:
https:/
https:/
The update procedure is required if you want to receive help. With the old release you are not able to install additional software from the repositories and this might be needed. It might also fix the problem.

Natty is no longer supported in any way you can think of. I suggest a clean install of either Precise (Ubuntu 12.04, LTS supported til April 2017) or Quantal (Ubuntu 12.10 which has shorter support but has the latest features).

Hi,
Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1:
If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications-
If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.
The methods in Unity are:
Press Control-ALT-T key combination.
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scan | egrep -i 'chan|ssid'; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Regards,
Mark

The following Terminal output (that you sent us) seems to indicate the issue that your wireless card is having:
"
*-network:0 DISABLED
description: Wireless interface
product: PRO/Wireless 2200BG [Calexico2] Network Connection
vendor: Intel Corporation
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
[ 12.871957] ipw2200 0000:01:03.0: PCI INT A -> Link[LNKB] -> GSI 5 (level, low) -> IRQ 5
[ 12.871982] ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
[ 14.033267] ipw2200: Radio Frequency Kill Switch is On:
[ 14.033271] Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking to work.
"
So your wireless card is probably disabled by a hardware switch, a
special key combination (Fn-F2, etc...), by incorrect BIOS settings for
wireless, or a COMBINATION of these factors...
There might also be a BIOS option that allows you to have the wireless
functionality controlled "By application"
Search for the "by application" option in the BIOS and select it (if
possible)....
Also run the following 2 Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill
state of your wireless chipset:
rfkill unblock all
sudo rfkill unblock all
Then retest wireless.

none of these commands work ... can you give me some special key combinations to try? ive looked into the BIOS and it requires a Config Password to do anything, i do not know the password to get to these settings..

Did you try the key combination I already gave you? Fn+F2, as described in #7.
Also try shutting down(if not already off), disconnecting the power, removing battery, press power a few times to release stored energy, reinsert battery(if it is a laptop), reconnect AC power. Turn on computer.
