whois command times out

Asked by Jordy Dickinson

For any IP address or hostname I've tried so far, the whois command consistently responds with "Timeout."

Example:

jordyd@whisper:~$ whois 74.125.229.164
Timeout.
jordyd@whisper:~$ whois -h whois.arin.net 74.125.229.164
Timeout.

I'm running 12.10, amd64.

I do not use a proxy.
