b43 driver blacklisted by wl driver + b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode15.fw" not found -> Wireless Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01) not working on Dell Inspiron 1011 in Ubuntu 12.10
I have a problem with connecting to my wifi
It looks like the Network manager doesn't see the name of my home network but it sees other possible networks. Additionally, ubuntu used to connect to this wifi a month ago with no problems. I have tried to create the connection once again but with no result.
I have no problem with wire connection.

Hi,
Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1:
If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications-
If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.
The methods in Unity are:
Press Control-ALT-T key combination.
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known) on this thread
Step 5: Please also clarify if you installed Ubuntu to the harddisk and are running from a harddisk install OR if you are only testing Ubuntu in a LiveCD session.
Regards,
Mark

The most likely cause for this is wifi interference. Open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and enter
-------
sudo iwlist scan
-------
You should see something similar to this
warren@dell:~$ sudo iwlist scan
[sudo] password for warren:
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.
wlan0 Scan completed :
Cell 01 - Address: 4C:60:DE:6B:85:4B

Cell 03 - Address: F8:D1:11:70:53:4E
Cell 04 - Address: 4C:60:DE:6B:85:4A
eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
warren@dell:~$
Take careful note of the channel numbers. You want to find a gap in the channel numbers and set your router to use this gap. Most routers have a web page interface for this and you can change it there. The documentation that came with your router should tell you how to do this.
If you need help choosing a suitable channel number let us know the name of your wifi and the output of the command.

Ubuntu 8.04 desktop edition is end of life and not supported anymore since May 12, 2011.
I suggest installing Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10.

I would certainly agree that you should upgrade
Looking at the list above there are clear signal on channels 1, 5, 9 and 11: Is one of these yours? If not try putting your router on channel 7
I don't think your computer is the problem -- look at router settings

Thank you
Warren - the problem is that Network manager sees all wifi signals of my neighbours apart of mine own and other devices have no problem with finding it.
So I try to reinstall the system
Wish me luck
I will come back to you with the result or cry for help

Your Terminal output shows the following issues:
[ 7.966392] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode15.fw" not found
[ 7.966403] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/
[ 7.966410] b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://
So you need to install the firmware for the b43 drivers.
# Warning: This file is autogenerated by bcmwl. All changes to this file will be lost.
blacklist b43
blacklist b43legacy
So the b43 driver are blacklisted /blocked, but you need to use the b43 driver instead of the wl drivers. You are currently using the wrong drivers (wl drivers).
To fix this, please copy-paste the following commands into the Terminal (using a working, WIRED Internet connection):
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install firmware-
Then please copy-paste each command below one by one into a Terminal. Hit <ENTER> after each command.
echo "blacklist bcma" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.
echo "blacklist brcmsmac" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.
echo "blacklist brcm80211" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.
After running the commands above, make sure to select "Load Defaults" in the BIOS, save the configuration.
Then reboot and retest wireless.
