Huawei E173 mobile broadband USB modem doesn't work out of the box

Asked by adam

My Huawei E173 USB modem (issued by Peruvian Movistar) is not detected by NetworkManager. I eventually manged to make it work using couple of hackish workarounds (including downloading a proprietary driver from some forum i googled out) but I believe it should work out of the box, so I'm reporting this as a bug.

The modem is identified by lsusb as

Bus 001 Device 017: ID 12d1:1c24 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10.

Hi there,

I don't need links to workarounds, because I already got it to work (which I mentioned in the bug report). I posted the bug report, because I believe that the fact that it doesn't work out of the box is a bug. Any thoughts?

Can you help with this problem?
