L45-S7423 FN wireless using FN F8
I am running Oneiric on an L45-S7423 Toshiba laptop. It has the Realtek 8187B Integrated Wireless USB internal adapter. I accidentally pressed the FN F8 key combination and found out the hard way that this key combination will turn off the radio but will not toggle it back on. So now, I have a laptop with no wireless capability. The hardware switch worked to turn the radio on and off before but will not restore what the software switch has turned off. When I got the computer, it had VISTA installed and FN F8 toggled the antenna, but since upgrading to Linux, the key combination will only turn off the antenna/radio.
I need a way to turn on switch. Any ideas?

I know my way around Linux although I am not an expert. If there is a patch, I can probably apply it If there is a command line, I can probably do that too (Set ????? some value). Rebooting does not help. My guess would be to re-install a clean system and then be very careful not to ever hit FN F8 again.

Hi,
Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1:
If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications-
If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.
So the methods in Unity are:
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Regards,
Mark

Also try this sequence of commands:
sudo modprobe -r rtl8187
sudo rfkill unblock all
sudo modprobe rtl8187
Then retest wireless.

look at the commands you were told to run, then look at what you ran. They are VERY different....

I suggest you run:
gksudo gedit /etc/hosts
and add the line:
127.0.0.1 dave-laptop
Save the new file and close gedit, you will now not get the:
sudo: unable to resolve host dave-laptop
warnings.
