b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found -> DISABLED Wireless Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11a/b/g [14e4:4324] (rev 03) not working on Dell Inspiron 2200 CV29K71 laptop in Ubuntu 11.10
I had installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop, and had to install the packages to get the wireless card to work. Once I had it working I upgraded to 11.04 and the wireless kept working as it should. But now I have upgraded to 11.10 and the wireless networking card (built in) is no longer working. I tried re-installing the packages I installed before but it still don't work. In fact, I have exactly the same problem as I had before, where first it said that firmware was missing, now don't even acknowledge that there is even a wireless card installed. Is there any way I can correct this problem? I need assistance on this matter as soon as possible, as I have to go out of town and the wireless is of utmost importance. Thank you in advance.

Could you look in to Additional Drivers and see if there are any entries for networking? Please provide more information also about your hardware. Please run in a Terminal 'lspci' and post the results.

Hi,
Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1:
If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications-
If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.
So the methods in Unity are:
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Regards,
Mark

Ok Thank you both. Sorry to take so long posting back, but my hard drive crashed in said unit and had to be replaced. Anyway, Jean, the output of lspci is:

Your BCM4306 chipset is supported by the b43legacy firmware.
Please copy-paste the following command into the Terminal:
sudo apt-get install firmware-
Then reboot and retest wireless.

Ok I did as you suggested, but the wireless is still not working. In fact, the system doesn't even acknowledge the fact that there is even a wireless device present. This is what the terminal displayed after I entered the command and entered my password:

So it says that the b43 legacy firmware is already installed, yet it don't work. What can be done now?

Please copy-paste the following commands into the Terminal:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
Then reboot and retest wireless using Network Manager.

Ok, once again I did as you suggested, however I got the same response. It told me that bcmwl-kernel-source was already installed and was latest. After reboot, still no wireless. I followed through with all the steps I had to go through when I got the wireless working on 10.10. The only thing I have not done is uninstall and re-install 11.10 and put the commands back in. That is what I ended up doing on 10.10, is it going to necessary to do this again? And if I end up re-installing the OS, in what order should I install the packages, and what commands do I need to use to do it? I must get this working as soon as possible. Thank you in advance.

Your blacklist entries do not indicate that the bcmwl-kernel-source package is already installed and do not show that the b43 driver is being blacklisted by the bcmwl-kernel-source package. When the bcmwl-kernel-source is installed, it usually automatically blacklists the b43 driver so that the wl driver can be activated...
The only logical conclusion is that your 11.10 install is broken.
I can only suggest performing a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04, because both the b43 and wl driver are not working for you in Ubuntu 11.10....
After installing 11.04, run this command and reboot your pc:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install firmware-
Sorry, but I have no further suggestions to make.
Maybe someone else has a better suggestion.

You might want to check also with Dell engineers if hardware is still working. Anyway, have you tried this solution? http://

Thank you Mark, I did as you said and now all is working well once again. Obviously there is an incompatibility problem with the b43 legacy firmware in 11.10. I will be submitting a bug report about this issue, and hopefully they can get it resolved. Thanks again, you have been a tremendous help.
