Can you post the output of the command below when you execute it on the Terminal:

lspci

We need a certain information so we could help you sort your wireless problem.

Hi,

Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1:

If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.

So the methods in Unity are:
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu website in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word lsmod. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt5|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|egrep 'Manufact|Product'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl'; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo lsmod

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Regards,

Mark

well, the first thing you should do is right click on the wireless icon and click enable networking. usually this is the culprit, especially if you came out of suspend or hibernation.

hey Mark, so I went to the page you suggested, and input the:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|usb|witch|wl'; iwconfig; grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*; grep wl /etc/modprobe.d/*; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; sudo lsmod; sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

then all this stuff came out:

Check the Terminal output:

0: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off

So your wireless is turned off now.

You need to press the hardware wireless on-off button to turn it on again.

In my previous post, I was referring to the following possible solution:

"Hi,

I found the following instruction on the net:

sudo modprobe acer-wmi force_series=6805
sudo iwlist scan

and after that the led of wifi turn on, then clicking with the rigth button on the network icon "Abilita reti senza fili" the wifi works.

thx again for your support
ciao"

Yes I try to press the button on the laptop but it doesn't change.

I input the:

sudo modprobe acer-wmi force_series=6805
sudo iwlist scan

and this came out:

midnightman@midnightman-laptop:~$ sudo modprobe acer-wmi force_series=6805
FATAL: Error inserting acer_wmi (/lib/modules/2.6.32-32-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/acer-wmi.ko): No such device
midnightman@midnightman-laptop:~$ sudo iwlist scan
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

Also run the following 2 Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill
state of your wireless chipset:

rfkill unblock all

sudo rfkill unblock all

Then retest wireless.

I suggest performing a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 and then following the instructions here, in case you hit trouble again:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/143439

The other person - Marco Diaz - is also using a COMPAQ Presario CQ50 and also using the Wireless Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter [168c:001c] (rev 01) just like you.

So it SHOULD work in Ubuntu 10.10, if you perform a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 (avoid the upgrade path).

okay, so I input the

rfkill unblock all

and nothing came up, so i assume that's okay.

and then input the

sudo rfkill unblock all

and then nothing came up, I unplugged my wired connection to try to test wireless but still does not work...

alright Mark, so you say to do a full install and not upgrade it, okay. well if that's the only way, I'll let you know when I've managed to get version 10.10 on this computer.

thanks.

Excellent sir! Looks like it worked out. I got Ubuntu 10.10 on here and used the solution that the other guy did and the wireless is working out. thanks!
