Having trouble detecting wireless network from Ubuntu 11.04 install
Hi,
I've got a Compaq Presario CQ60 and I've just installed Ubuntu 11.04 over the top a failed factory restore of Vista (long story, but, daughter now has new Mac Pro) and I'm trying to revive the old laptop with a new OS. The install went fairly smoothly, except it can't connect to our wireless network. I tried to connect manually via [System.
Thanks in advance for any assistance
David K.

Hi,
I've just done a reboot. While rebooting, the wireless button turned RED. After Ubuntu started, the wireless button turned BLUE. When I open Firefox it's the same issue "Server not found"... This is not an urgent issue as there's 2 other computers in the house, but, I would still like to get Ubuntu connecting to the family wireless.
Cheers & Thanks for all and any assistance.

Hi,
I'm still having issues setting up the wireless connection, so I thought I'd take a look around (I'm a webMethods systems engineer, so I'm familiar with HP Unix and RH Linux... New to Ubuntu). So I found Systems-
Still will appreciate any help or assistance.

The following Terminal output (that you sent us) shows the issue that
your wireless card is having:
"
*-network DISABLED
description: Wireless interface
product: AR5001 Wireless Network Adapter
0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any
"
So your wireless card is disabled by a hardware switch, a
special key combination (Fn-F2, etc...), by incorrect BIOS settings for
wireless, or a COMBINATION of these factors...
There might also be a BIOS option that allows you to have the wireless
functionality controlled "By application"
Search for the "by application" option in the BIOS and select it (if
possible)....
Also run the following 2 Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill
state of your wireless chipset:
rfkill unblock all
sudo rfkill unblock all
Then retest wireless.
NOTE: If the CURRENT "rfkill list" Terminal output only shows SOFT blocked in YES state and HARD blocked in NO state, then the "rfkill unblock all" command I just gave you, should be enough to solve this wireless issue.

Do you get a network icon in the top panel? If so it might be as simple as right clicking, then left click on enable wireless. If you do not see a network icon try typing nm-applet into the terminal command line.
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask David Kaye for more information if necessary.
