0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN soft blocked and hard blocked -> Wireless Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN [14e4:4311] (rev 02) disabled and not working on Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook PC in Ubuntu 10.10
Hi,
My laptop has a broadcom bcm 4311 wireless card and none of the available drivers (two) works.
Before i changed to ubuntu 10.10, it worked well with 10.04.
Its not a hardware problem because i changed to another laptop and its working.
Does anybody has a clue on what the problem is?
Will a new kernel solve the situation or is a configuration problem, cause i have no clue...
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
Please first connect your network card to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from the https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known) on this thread
Regards,
Mark

That is not the right output.
The correct Terminal command starts with sudo and ends with restart.
The command you entered, did not end with restart but with lshw or something similar....
Please send us the full output of the following command:
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/

1) The following Terminal output (that you sent us) shows the issue that your wireless card is
having:
"
0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: yes
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
"
So your wireless card is currently disabled by a hardware switch, a
special key combination (Fn-F2, etc...), by incorrect BIOS settings for
wireless, or a combination of these factors...
There might also be a BIOS option that allows you to have the wireless
functionality controlled "By application"
Search for the "by application" option in the BIOS and select it (if
possible)....
Also run the following 2 Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill
state of your wireless chipset:
rfkill unblock all
sudo rfkill unblock all
2) Another problem is the following output:
root@UltimaWeap
I hope that you are not logged on as root. You should log on as a NORMAL user (log on as hugo, not as root) and use the sudo command to execute commands with root privileges.
Here is more info about sudo:
https:/
So you need to log in as a normal user whenever you test your wireless connection.
3) Also make sure you have installed the package b43-fwcutter using this procedure:
Step 1: Open Terminal from "Applications-
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following 2 commands into the Linux Terminal. Press <enter> after each command.
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install b43-fwcutter
b43-fwcutter exists in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a working Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to locate it and install it.
After installing b43-fwcutter, please reboot and then retest wireless.

HI again.
After following those steps including the bios, it is now working.
I use ifconfig to see the network cards that are available and if are working, to enable or disable them.
The "rfkill unblock" command was unknown to me so it was good that you mentioned it.
As for the terminal that i use is the Root Terminal which opens automatically in root, and do the apt-get update/upgrade commands to update the system.
I hope i´m not doing wrong.
Thanks for the help.
