Dell wireless problem

Asked by neha

I am having dell inspiron 1525.I recently installed 10.04 over 9.04,but the wireless does not work properly.whenever a network connection ends automatically,it is unable to reconnect automatically.I have to switch off the wireless switch and then again restart it.
Is there any solution possible for my problem??
Thank you.

Hi
You can try out linux-backports-modules-wireless drivers to check if its a problem with your card drivers.Alternatively you can try the wicd network manager to check if its a network manager issue

Thank you Rohan,
I installed wicd network manager but it is unable to detect any connection,it is only displaying in the status bar that the following network is connected.Expected that i am getting nothing from it.I also installed linux-backports-modules-driver,but how to check that there is a problem with my card driver??

Can you please tell us what wireless adapter you're using with running the command 'lspci' and posting output?

Thanks,
Montel Edwards

Oh.. broadcom, now we can fix it ( probably ).
@Neha : Press Alt+F2 and type jockey-gtk : that should start up a program that will scan your computer for hardware devices which are not activated, there you can activate either of the 2 broadcom drivers and check which one works for your card.
If that doesnt work have a look https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx
Also have a look at https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/31232

Hi neha

You can have a go at the following command

sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

and test out if it works out of the box

along with rohan's excellent explanation :)

Regards

ah missed a couple of things

a reboot is required after installation

and

if you are on ipv6 refer

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/417757

for slow dns lookups

Cheers,
