Firefox and Thunderbird internet problems

Asked by Neil

Hi
I have a problem with internet connection, I can not use Firefox, Thunderbird these will not load pages or download emails.
I'm using 10.4
I am also having problem with Ubuntu software center, update manager & Terminal (to download), I can only use these programs if I get Software Sources to select a server, get it to reload, then I can update or download with them once but only once, then I have to get it to select another server, and go thought the whole process again. as you can understand this is a pain....

But as I said Firefox & Thunderbird will not do anything. nor google earth.
But I can use google chrome & opera, download with them, do what I like on the Net. (very strange) with out getting Software Sources to did it thing..
Skype, amsn, Gmail checker work fine as well.

It have not changed any modem settings, Xp on this and other computers in the house are fine also I have a VOIP connected to the modem with no problems, so I have to assume that it is Ubuntu.

I had some problems with wireless with 9.10 but once I connected with an ethernet cable and did the updates it fixed that problem. but not this time wireless or wired same problem.

Please help...

I need Ubuntu running properly.
Regards Neil

Log a bug with the mozilla products.

Have you tried the mozilla PPA? The later builds may help

If the issue is only with 10.04 then log a bug

10.04 still has a LOT of work to be done in it and is not for the masses just yet. You WILL get issues using beta releases.

HI Scottie
not really.. But it's not the modem. it is you ip provider they are not using ipv6 I don't really know what that is but it is something to do with internet speed and how is communicates. (all over my head) and Ubuntu is not handling the problem to well, a lot of IP are still using ipv4, mine included. so we will have some problems, until either Ubuntu fixes the problem with that side of the problem or your IP updates there system.
But it can be worked around.
the easiest is use Google chrome instead of Firefox. it works fine. but to fix Firefox is easy.
open F/f in the address bar type about:config
look for the line that says
network.dns.disableIPv6 change the value from false to true (double clicking on that line will do that)

you can do the same in Thunderbird from edit-preferences-advanced-config editor.

Hope this helps you.

Please also disable ipv6 globally in your system: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-disable-ipv6-in-ubuntu.html
