record streaming radio with sound recorder ?

Asked by achevrier

Hi,
And Happy Newbuntu year !
I often listen MP3 128 kpbs streaming australian "Triple J Radio" (link http://abc.net.au/streaming/triplej/triplej.m3u ) accross Totem 2.4.3.
I would like to record.
I've found Sound Recorder (Applications -> Sound -> Sound Recorder). I've tried to record, but Sound Recorder does not want to work. When I click on record button, nothing happen and Sound Recorder blocks and I have to close it, forcing it.

Your help will be really wellcome !

Sorry, I made a mistake in my previous message:
Version of Totem I use is 1.4.3, and not 2.4.3.

Happy New Year!

Streamripper is a tool for capturing radio you can install it on Ubuntu from the usual Synaptic Package Manager.

Here's what happens when I open a terminal (Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal) and try to capture that station, then stop it after a few seconds:-

alan@wopr:~$ streamripper http://abc.net.au/streaming/triplej/triplej.m3u
Connecting...
stream: 'triplej'
server name: Icecast 2.0-alpha2/cvs
bitrate: 0
meta interval: 16000

[ripping... ] - [ 390kb]
shutting down
bye..

It saves to a directory which is the same name as the stream, in this case I found a folder in my home directory called 'triplej' in which there was an MP3 which played fine.

There are probably better more elegant ways to do it, but that worked :)

Hi Alan Pope,
I've tried your solution.

After "meta interval : -1", nothing happend.

Here is what I wrote in Terminal, and text appeard.

=>
me@meubuntu:~$ streamripper http://abc.net.au/streaming/triplej/triplej.m3uConnecting...
stream: Streamripper_rips
server name: Apache
bitrate: 0
meta interval: -1"
=>

Then, nothing.

You appear to have the word "Connecting" on the end of the streamripper line. That should not be there.

Sorry, => it's a crtl C effect result.

Word "Connecting..." was separated from URL text in Terminal like that :

me@meubuntu:~$ streamripper http://abc.net.au/streaming/triplej/triplej.m3u
Connecting...
stream: Streamripper_rips
server name: Apache
bitrate: 0
meta interval: -1"

Hi,
I remount this post, because my problem has not been solved.
When I follow the advices above, nothing happens.
Why Alan succeed in and not me ? It's a mysterious thing !
One told me to open the URL in Gedit, to find an other URL and replace the first one by the other found thanks to gEdit.
And ... it works with this new URL opened with gEdit.

However, is there a solution to use an other way, more graphic ?

It is possible that you and Alan are using different versions of streamripper and that yours did not follow the information in the m3u file. I had the same success that Alan did. What version of Ubuntu are you using? What version of streamripper do you have installed? You can find out via 'dpkg -l streamripper'.

Hi,
I appreciate your help.
I'm using Ubuntu june 06 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake updated and 1.61.17-1 streamripper version.

Nevertheless, I've tried to rip mp3 radio streams using streamripper after having detect URL opened with gedit.
And, really, it works perfectly.

The version of streamripper on Edgy is quite different so I imagine that that is why with one version it will follow the url and the other you have to detect it.

Thanks for your comment.
I think you're right.
As I prefer to wait a bit long before installing Edgy version, I should have to use the other solution, detecting URL with Gedit.
Anyway, I've found many solutions to solve streaming problems, reading the excellent HOWTO published here (must be recommanded):

http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=169278

There are plenty of links for MP3 and other types of streams questions.

Thank you for your help !
