Cannot get DVD player to work . Have Ubuntu O.S.

Have installed 3 different applications and none have opened the player. What HAS to be done to get it to play?

you have to install the additional plugins for players (i.e) codecs to play the videos

Download it from software center and install it..

Adding copious amounts of players does NOT add a DVD decoder. It is an entirely separate package which is not a dep of any player. You could install the entire aray of media players from the repos and you STILL wouldn't be able to play DVDs. Have you ever seen this guide. It's a pretty simple process:
