Upgrade software on iPod touch on Ubuntu?

Asked by titagula

I recently purchased a used iPod touch, and it's operating system was 3.1, which is pretty old. I need to upgrade that for apps that I want, but I can't, because I don't have iTunes, (I tried running it through wine, and it failed. When I hit a button, the entire program would just close down, and my computer got VERY slow) I tried giving it to a friend with iTunes, and he said that it said something about "syncing apps" or something, and he didn't want to risk wrecking anything. Is there a way to update the software without itunes, or perhaps a better way to install iTunes without play on linux?
This software is older, so it can't just update with wi-fi access, and I don't have wi-fi at my house.

you need iTunes to update an iPod's iOS.

most likely if you plugged your iOS device into your friends iTunes it will attempt to sync his information to that device.
You are correct. iTunes and Wine .. its debatable .. dont work. see http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/itunes

" Can I run iTunes in Ubuntu (or Linux in general)?
No, you can't. "

Your best bet is to sync and update the iOS from another computer with iTunes, you can dual boot Windows .. etc etc

A proof of concept tool that actually allows you to upgrade your iPod firmware without using iTunes.
